Intramammary Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) as a Novel Adjunct Therapy in the Management of Clinical Mastitis in a Dairy Cow: A Case Report

Abstract
Mastitis continues to be a highly significant infectious disease in dairy cattle, leading to considerable production declines and jeopardizing animal welfare. This case report details the treatment of clinical mastitis in a 5-year-old Sahiwal dairy cow presented at the Veterinary Clinical Complex (VCC), Bihar Veterinary College, Bihar Animal Sciences University, Patna-14, exhibiting typical symptoms of udder inflammation, purulent milk discharge from two quarters, minimal discharge from the remaining quarters, mild fever (103.1°F), and systemic effects such as decreased appetite and diminished ruminal motility. The diagnosis was corroborated by the California Mastitis Test (CMT), somatic cell count (SCC), and milk pH. The therapeutic regimen included systemic amikacin (10 mg/kg body weight), anti-inflammatory therapy, and a solitary intramammary infusion of platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which was prepared with trisodium citrate as an anticoagulant and derived from the centrifugation of jugular venous blood at 1,000 rpm for 30 minutes. PRP was injected singularly into each impacted quarter. Clinical enhancement was noted at 72 hours, characterized by less udder edema and a resurgence of hunger, whilst milk quality was enhanced by 96 hours. Post-treatment values for CMT, SCC, and milk pH exhibited enhancement. The noted reaction transpired amid multimodal therapy; thus, the isolated impact of PRP cannot be determined from this singular instance. Additional regulated clinical trials are necessary to assess its safety, effectiveness, dose, and function as a supplementary treatment in the therapy of bovine mastitis.
