Abstract

This study examined the marketing of pomegranate in Sayla Taluka of Jalore District, Rajasthan, with the objectives of identifying prevailing marketing channels, estimating price spread and marketing efficiency, and determining the constraints faced by supply-chain stakeholders. A descriptive research design was adopted, and primary data were collected through a structured schedule from 100 pomegranate farmers and 45 marketing functionaries selected purposively across ten villages. Four marketing channels were identified, comprising three traditional channels and one organised collection-and-distribution channel. Based on the reported calculations, Channel IV recorded the highest farmer net price of ₹13,511.07 per quintal, the highest producer’s share of 73.47%, and the highest marketing efficiency of 1.89. Channel I ranked second in efficiency, followed by Channels III and II. Channel II provided the lowest farmer return at ₹7,180.00 per quintal, whereas Channel III recorded the widest reported price spread. Farmers ranked unfavourable weather conditions, pest and disease infestation, and high input costs as their principal production constraints. Their major marketing constraints were low price realisation, inadequate farm-level storage, and insufficient transport facilities. Intermediaries reported quality variation, price fluctuation, handling losses, and high transportation, packaging, and labour costs. The findings indicate that organised market linkages may improve farmer returns; however, the reported channel calculations require verification before definitive efficiency-based recommendations are made.
