Yield Response of Garlic in cv. Neeli Dhari by Using Organic and Inorganic Sources of Nitrogen in Jalandhar, Punjab, India

Abstract
A field experiment was conducted during the 2023–24 Rabi season at the horticultural field of the Department of Agriculture, Sant Baba Bhag Singh University, Khiala, Jalandhar, to evaluate the yield response of garlic cv. Neeli Dhari to organic and inorganic nitrogen sources. The experiment was arranged in a randomised block design with nine treatments and three replications. Treatments comprised the recommended fertiliser dose, sole farmyard manure or vermicompost, and graded combinations of these organic sources with urea. Observations included fresh and dry bulb weight, bulb diameter, neck thickness, clove length and weight, fresh and dry shoot weight, weights of 100 unpeeled and peeled cloves, peeling index, bulb yield and economic returns. Treatment T4, comprising 75% of the recommended nitrogen dose through farmyard manure and 25% through urea, recorded the highest fresh and dry bulb weights (24.08 and 20.56 g), bulb diameter (39.83 mm), neck thickness (9.52 mm), clove length (3.50 cm), clove weight (4.28 g), fresh and dry shoot weights (15.56 and 7.06 g), and peeling index (91.95%). It also produced the highest yield (8.57 kg/plot and 9.52 t/ha), gross return (₹952,100/ha), net return (₹745,436/ha) and benefit–cost ratio (3.60). Under the study conditions, partial substitution of urea with farmyard manure improved garlic productivity and economic performance.
