Abstract

The current study was conducted at Pera village, Navsari, Gujarat, during 2024 and 2025 using Nauroji Stonehouse fruit fly traps baited with methyl eugenol. The study focused on assessing the population of fruit flies and associated infestation during the active cropping season. The results indicated that fruit fly activity was recorded during most of the year, with considerable variation in abundance. During 2024, the population attained its first peak of 44.40 flies per 10 traps per week during the 16th SMW and a second peak of 42.90 flies during the 48th SMW. During 2025, the first peak of 43.40 flies per 10 traps per week was recorded during the 19th SMW, while the highest population of 44.70 flies was recorded during the 48th SMW. The population remained low during the initial months, increased during the guava fruiting period, declined during the monsoon and increased again during the post-monsoon period. Correlation studies revealed that fruit fly abundance had a positive association with maximum temperature and bright sunshine hours, whereas rainfall showed a negative association during both years. The results of this investigation may inform the development of a sustainable pest management strategy for commercial orchards.
